Each year, the issue of sidewalk snow removal is raised by concerned residents. In 2008, the contract for sidewalk snow ploughing will be up for consideration .
Some Scarborough residents have expressed an interest to shovel their own sidewalks instead of the City providing this service. Before this matter is discussed, there are several factors to consider.
I would like to present a few facts which might help you answer the question below.
Sidewalk snow clearing facts
- Seniors and people with disabilities usually require assistance to have snow removed from around their property, and would probably prefer to keep this service.
- If the mechanical sidewalk clearing program was to be discontinued, the City would still be required to provide assistance to these residents to clear their sidewalks.
- Providing snow removal to selected properties instead of the whole street would actually be more expensive and involve more organization, since individual properties would have to be plouged.
