Each year, the issue of sidewalk snow removal is raised by concerned residents. In 2008, the contract for sidewalk snow ploughing will be up for consideration .

Some Scarborough residents have expressed an interest to shovel their own sidewalks instead of the City providing this service. Before this matter is discussed, there are several factors to consider.

I would like to present a few facts which might help you answer the question below.

Sidewalk snow clearing facts

Seniors and people with disabilities usually require assistance to have snow removed from around their property, and would probably prefer to keep this service.

If the mechanical sidewalk clearing program was to be discontinued, the City would still be required to provide assistance to these residents to clear their sidewalks.

Providing snow removal to selected properties instead of the whole street would actually be more expensive and involve more organization, since individual properties would have to be plouged.

Residents have complained about damage to their property caused by sidewalk snow removal. This problem has been partially addressed by adjustments to the blade used on sidewlks
